Instagram expands into long videos

Instagram, now nearly 8 years old, announced that it was adding a new feature called IGTV dedicated to long-form video. The said feature is an expansion from its photo-sharing app nature to compete among other streaming services like YouTube.

The IGTV will increase Instagram video time limit from one minute to 10 minutes for most of the users while accounts with larger reach and audience will experience as long as an hour.

With this section, it will allow Facebook to have more opportunities to sell advertising.

The new programming format will consist exclusively of vertical video designed to fill the entire screen of smartphones — the devices that are emerging as the main way younger people watch video. On the other hand, most YouTube videos fill only a portion of the screen unless the phone is tilted horizontally.

Instagram Chief Executive Kevin Systrom said that Instagram surpassed 1 billion monthly active users.
